Tokyo was chosen as the host city for the 125th IOC session in Buenos Aires (Argentina) on 7 September 2013. The original event for the Tokyo Olympic was scheduled for 24 July to 9 Aug 2020. However, it was moved to 2021 in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the first such incident in the history Olympic Games. Previous games were cancelled, but not rescheduled. The Tokyo 2020 title was retained for marketing and branding purposes. It was largely held behind closed doors with no public spectators permitted due to the declaration of a state of emergency. The Summer Paralympics will be held between 24 August and 5 September 2021, 16 days after the completion of the Olympics.

The 2020 Summer Olympics event held from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan, with some preliminary events that began on 21 July.

Tokyo Olympic 2020 Game introduced new competitions, and reintroduced old competitions that were previously held but were later removed. The new competitions include freestyle BMX, 3×3 basketball and mixed gender team events in a variety of sports. There is also the return to madison cycling for both men and women. The Japanese Olympic Committee added four disciplines to the program: softball and baseball, karate and sport climbing. Surfing, skateboarding and surfing were also included.
